Stephen (Steve) Smith was born in Huddersfield on 28th April 1946. After progressing through his native club's Juniors he signed professional in October 1963. He broke into the first team in midfield in the 1964-65 seasopn, when he made six League appearances. He did not cement a regular first team spot until the 1970-71 season but was a regular for the rest of his Town career but in December 1974 he went on loan to Bolton Wanderers, making three appearances. He made three hundred and thirty starts and twelve substitute appearances in the League and scored thirty goals. He joined Halifax Town in August 1977 where he scored four times in eighty-one eague games, three of which were as a substitute. He returned to Huddersfield as a non-contract player from 1979 to 1987, which included a two year spell as manager, as well as positions as reserve team coach, youth team coach and chief scout. On 26th April 2012 he was returned to the club as Head of Academy Recruitment.
